Top Car Insurance Options For Seniors

Insurance companies are looking for seniors who have been good and safe drivers for many years. However, not all car insurance companies are willing to reward seniors by offering discounts. The companies who do provide discounts, to those members 50 years of age and older, do not readily advertise those benefits.  The following curated list only includes companies who have a direct program for seniors. The way some companies do this is by offering technology in the form of apps that monitor your driving behavior. Based on the data received, they reward you with discounts or deals. Others offer you reduced flat rates for just taking a refresher driving course designed for senior drivers. Car insurance companies even offer deals for having additional safety features installed in your car. Here are a few agencies that are looking to reward and provide the best discounts and deals to safe senior drivers.

Allstate Insurance Company

Allstate offers several ways for senior drivers to save. They offer discounts, double discounts, and bundle deals on insurance policies for senior citizens. One program rewards you for having anti-lock brakes and anti-theft systems installed. Many cars already come with those as standard so make sure you let your insurance agent know this. A bundled rate is applied when you have multiple insurance policies with ALLState such as home or boat insurances. Allstate continues to reward you with additional discounts for never missing a payment. This program is called the  “Responsible Payer” program.

AARP/Hartford Insurance Company

AARP stands for the American Association of Retired Persons and offers a vast array of insurances for retirees. If you are an existing member then you are qualified for discounts through the Hartford Insurance Company. This auto insurance policy is specifically designed for seniors. Their monthly premium has been rated as below-average in cost and offers Comprehensive Coverage options.

Geico Insurance

Geico Insurance offers some of the lowest premiums available for seniors. Geico’s low premium senior discounts makes it one of the most popular insurance carriers among seniors. For mature and safe drivers Geico offers military discounts, discounts for taking a (singular) defensive driving class, accident forgiveness, safe driving programs, and bundling options for all your home and auto needs.

Amica Insurance Company

For senior drivers looking for monthly discounts on their premiums, Amica offers a great program called SafetyServe. Like Geico, Amica is a smaller company when compared to the titans of the insurance world like ALLstate, but they have very low monthly premiums and amazing discounts for all mature drivers. They all offer discounts for paying your annual premium in one payment called the FullPay discount. Amica also offers bundling options for those who have several active accounts with Amica.

USAA Insurance Company

USAA offers some of the best discounts and premiums if you have served, or are currently serving, in a branch of the U.S. military. A popular claim USAA makes is that by switching to them from your old provider they save customers almost $700 dollars a year in savings and discounts. Additionally, seniors receive up to a 10% discount on their annual premiums for being a safe driver, maintaining a clean record for more than five years, and by taking a defensive driving course. While they do not seem to do bundle deals, they offer additional discounts for having multiple policies with them, up to 10%.

Farmers Insurance Group

For the most comprehensive and easy to understand discount programs, many seniors choose Farmers Insurance Group. They offer discounts for opening multiple policies, taking defensive driving courses online, enrollment in auto-pay, paying the annual premium in full at one time, and by switching to Farmers from a competitor. For those with multiple policies, they offer bundling packages which usually come with additional discounts.

State Farm Insurance Company

State Farm Insurance Company offers seniors up to 50% in savings just with their bundling programs, Drive Safe program, and Save Programs. Drive Safe is an app paired device that plugs into your car and you receive discounts on safe driving, while driving. Enrollment in auto-pay features also grants you additional discounts, as does bundling together multiple policies. Additionally, like many insurance companies, you can increase your savings by taking a safe driving course.

How to Find and Get the Best Car Insurance Rates for Seniors

The most important thing seniors can do to get the best rates on car insurance is to go get quotes from many different insurance providers. When you visit, inform the insurance providers that you are shopping around. It may prompt better discounts and deals as insurance is a very competitive market, and each office is independently owned. This allows you to see the broad spectrum of prices and discounts offered, then pick which is best for you. Your monthly insurance payment is based on a few things, all of which can be negotiated. The price is not always set in stone and by asking and digging deeper it can usually be managed into agreeable terms for all parties involved. Since each company is independently owned they  have the ability to set and rearrange the discounts and prices to fit you better.
